Covid-19 & International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife 2020

This is the platform for ICN’s National Nurses Associations to share their experiences, learnings and advice from the frontlines of COVID-19

It could not be more timely that the World Health Organization designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. The courageous work of nurses and other healthcare workers in face of coronavirus does honour to the YONM 2020 and the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. Florence would be proud of you.

ICN is bringing the nursing community together during this unprecedented pandemic in modern times by sharing on this platform all the information and knowledge gathered by you, our member associations.

Send in your videos, photos and stories and we will share them with ICN family!
Thank you!

Annette Kennedy

ICN President

“In this Year of the Nurse and Midwife, the eyes of the world are on our profession in a way that we could not have anticipated. Nurses are in the spotlight, and all around the planet this tragic pandemic is revealing the irreplaceable work of nursing for all to see.”

Howard Catton
“Strong health systems and strong nursing associations go hand-in hand. What we are seeing is National Nurses Associations (NNAs) across the world stepping up to lead management coordination of the COVID-19 response effort…NNAs play a vital role, shaping, improving, building and developing health systems. Their expertise, advice, evidence and direct contact with grassroots nursing is an essential part of the successful management of these outbreaks, and of others in the future.”

HRH Princess
Muna Al Hussein
from Jordan

“To our nation’s nurses, midwives, physicians, health care providers and first responders:

I would like to thank you all personally for the wonderful and vital job you are doing in these very difficult times. My heart goes out to you and your families for all you are doing to care for people and keep the world safe. Nurses and midwives, you have already crowned your 2020 Year of the Nurse and Midwife with your courage, compassion and dedication to patients and the global community.

So proud of you all. May God keep you all safe and may He bless you all. Your health and safety are very important to us all.”

For International Nurses Day 2020, ICN has chosen the theme Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Nursing the World to Health. We are developing a variety of fantastic resources (logo, posters, report, videos, etc) for you to use to make sure the world hears our voice on 12 May and throughout the year!
ICN is part of a global voice that’s been speaking for nurses around the world for 120 years. This timeline celebrates the inspirational women and men whose dedication and pioneering spirit helped to create the ICN, which now represents over the 20 million nurses worldwide!
